Silicone is quickly becoming the material of choice for the next generation of hand emulation.  The above image is just one example of the realism that can be custom crafted into this type of prosthetic device.  Although currently classified as "cosmetic", Canadian HERO has been studying the "functional" applications and advantages of silicone based prosthetic devices. From protecting skin grafts and preventing injury to everyday tasks and  high level athletics, silicone based prosthetics have proven to be extremely "functional" and important devices.

  Canadian HERO and Bloorview Kids Rehab have completed working together on a very important . In this research initiative we examined the chemical properties, tensile strengths, elasticity, durability and feasibility of solid silicone hands for partial hand amputees.
